Is now the right time to put solar on your Bay Area home?
Whether you’re about to put your Bay Area home on the market, and you’re wondering what you can do to increase its resale value; or you’re just looking to save money on energy and invest wisely, you’ve been confronting the ‘solar question.’ Is it worth it to install solar panels on your home?
Debate over this solar question question rages widely on the internet and elsewhere.A new study out of Lawrence Berkeley Lab suggests that solar advocates have it right. Researchers looked at home sales during the first decade of 21st century and found that buyers paid around $5.5 per watt as a premium expense: approximately $17,000 for a 3.1 kilowatt system. Meanwhile, homeowners only paid $5 per watt, after they took advantage of California and federal incentives. In other words, homeowners not only helped save the planet and reduced their energy bills, but they also enjoyed a net financial benefit from the installation.
The study was big, too. It looked at around 72,000 home sales in the Golden State.
The efficiency of solar installation is also improving. So if you can install a solar system for just $4 a watt, for instance, and then later sell your home for a premium of $6 per watt — assuming the market continues on the current course — you will enjoy an even greater net benefit.
Solar: Finally on Its Way to Becoming Mainstream?
The energy debate lights up politicians and activists in California. What sources of energy, alternative or otherwise, should power our homes, our lives, and our communities?
One energy source, for all intents and purposes, is limitless: the gigantic nuclear furnace 93 million miles away that we call the sun. It’s only a matter of time before Californians extract most or all of our energy from this star. Consider: in 2011 alone, nearly a gigawatt of solar went online, almost doubling national capacity.
